Latgale is the easternmost region of Latvia and one of the historical Latvian lands. While the most of Latvia is historically Lutheran, Latgale is predominantly Catholic.
One of the most important Catholic spiritual centres in Latvia is in the village of Aglona- a final destination of this spiritual itinerary. Thousands of pilgrims visit Aglona Basilica every year on the 15-th of August – the day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We recommend you coordinate your visit with this date if you would like to attend this religious event.
There is a considerable Eastern Orthodox minority in Latgale consisting of Russian Orthodox Christians and Old Believers. Latgale Spiritual route starts right in the Old Believers village of Slutishki in Daugava’s Loki Nature Park.
