Zemgale River Outing
Zemgale River Outing
Bauska – Jelgava
Rundale palace ensemble – Mūsa and Mēmele river confluence – The Lielupe river floodplain meadows, Natura 2000 Site
South Latvia
Best timing: April – May
Zemgale, the southernmost part of Latvia, teems of cute small rivers with calm waters and enchanting landscapes around.
April and May are the best timing for discovering Zemgale rivers because in the summer season they are shallowing due to the low water level.
In this river outing we invite you to explore Zemgale rivers that became nature sights – Musa, Memele, Driksa and the most significant for the region -Lielupe. This route will take you to two cities located on the Lielupe riverbanks, that are home to two medieval castles and two very famous baroque palaces. The Lielupe floodplain meadows in Jelgava are Natura 2000 site and national nature reserve, where the wild horses graze.
To make your river outing complete, we suggest you go on a boat tour. You can find contacts and prices of the local boat tour organizers in our guidebook to this route.
