Cape Kolka – Dundaga – Kuldiga, UNESCO World Heritage Site

- Edole – Alsunga, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Site – Jurkalne

Slitere National Park

West Latvia

Best timing: middle of April – June

Of course, tastes are different, but in our opinion, this itinerary goes through the most beautiful part of the very beautiful Latvia. Washed by the wild waves of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga, Kurzeme (Courland) seems to be an embassy of French Brittany or Spanish Galicia in the Baltics. Travelling on this route, you will discover the gems of Kurzeme – breathtaking sea views, stunning pristine nature, rich history and cultural diversity, medieval castles wrapped in legends and UNESCO Heritage Sites.

The heart of Kurzeme and UNESCO Heritage Site Kuldiga is home to the Europe’s widest waterfall. In Spring and beginning of Summer the city becomes place where one can observe an interesting natural phenomenon – “flying fish”. During seasonal spawning a fish called “Vimba” attempts to overcome the waterfall by jumping into the air. To see the “flying fish” in Kuldiga, we recommend visiting Kurzeme at the turn of Spring and Summer.

Another UNESCO Heritage Site on this route is an enchanting village of Alsunga. From our guidebook you will learn why it was inscribed into the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, who the “Suiti” are, how their traditional costume looks like, and what it has to do with France.

You will make a lot of new discoveries, learn the local legends and sample local cuisine, that reflects the diversity of the region. All this awaits you during your 2-day trip in Kurzeme.
